From the President: A Note on SAM in KC

In August 2017 the NAACP issued its first ever travel advisory for a single state, Missouri, citing the fact that “African Americans in Missouri are 75 percent more likely to be stopped and searched by law enforcement officers than Caucasians” (http://bit.ly/2vtF77G). Their concern was amplified by the passage of Senate Bill 43, which makes it harder to prove discrimination in workplaces, housing, or public accommodation, and harder to win such lawsuits.

» Saturday Evening Banquet and Entertainment:

Kansas City BBQ Buffet

Help a student attend the BBQ buffet by purchasing a student banquet subsidy ($25) when you register for the conference. Note that all students attending must purchase a $25 student ticket.

This year, to pay homage to the unique food culture of Kansas City, the chefs at the Intercontinental are preparing a delicious barbeque for our shared Saturday night meal. Complete with ribs, brisket, coleslaw, corn bread, cobbler, and much more, this buffet feast will have something for everyone. Are you vegetarian, vegan, or have another dietary need? Not to worry! The chefs also have Kansas City-inspired meals just for you. Simply let Mariana Whitmer know when you register for the barbeque. Seating this year will be open so members can enjoy their meal with old friends, while making new one, too! Fun conversation starters will be available for each table so the banquet can be a place to celebrate SAM's vibrant membership. Please consider sponsoring a student's meal! Information about student barbeque subvention and barbeque tickets are available on the conference registration form. ($50 general/$25 student)

Storytelling Competition (It's true!)

Join us for a little Storytelling Competition, where YOU, our wonderful members, compete! See below for all the details. You will fashion a 5-minute story to share with the other barbeque attendees. Kansas City’s own Chuck Haddix, UMKC Marr Sound Archives director and host of the popular radio show “The Fish Fry,” will emcee the event. We have awesome SAM swag to award to the best storytellers!

Entertainment by Victor and Penny

The post-barbeque entertainment will begin at 9 p.m. in a separate room. People who want to stay and talk after the barbeque are welcome to do so; others can go to a neighboring room to enjoy the entertainment, which you don't have to buy a banquet ticket to attend. So if you've gone out for dinner, you can return to the hotel for a night of music. This year the entertainers are Victor and Penny (Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane), who promise a highly entertaining musical history lesson on the roots and evolution of Kansas City jazz, from Euday Bowman's 1913 "12th Street Rag" to Charlie Parker's 1946 "Yardbird Suite." Listening and dancing are encouraged! Check out their website: www.victorandpenny.com
