The Menger Hotel is an independent hotel located in the very center of downtown San Antonio. Since its construction at the time of the U.S. Civil War, the Menger has been one of the American West’s landmark hotels. Now almost 150 years old, it has been continually modified and updated to fit the changing tastes of its visitors. While it is large enough to comfortably hold full-size conferences, it also retains a distinctive historic air. The famous Menger Bar, installed in the late 1880s, is a period copy of the House of Lords Pub in London. It was in this bar that Theodore Roosevelt recruited many of the volunteers for the American Cavalry that fought in the Spanish-American War. The hotel dining room—home to the famous mango ice cream much beloved by certain ex-Presidents—is breathtakingly lovely and, like the rest of the hotel, beautifully maintained. Travel to San Antonio

By Air

The San Antonio airport is located inside city limits about 5 miles north of downtown. It’s a relatively modest-sized airport and still quite easy to navigate. Highway 281 leads stright north from downtown to the airport. Depending on traffic the commute will take between 10 and 20 minutes. Taxis are available at the airport and will cost around $20 one way. The Menger Hotel does not operate its own shuttle service. Instead, it encourages visitors to use a service called SA Trans, which leaves every 30 minutes from the main terminals at the airport. One-way shuttle tickets on SA Trans cost $14. Like similar services in other U.S. metropolitan areas, the SA Trans shuttles make stops at several hotels before heading for the airport.

By Car

San Antonio lies at the intersection of two major interstates: I-35 and I-10 (or, in Texas terms, IH-35 and IH-10). Houston lies three hours to the east. Austin, 75 minutes to the north. Travelers from any direction should follow the signs to downtown San Antonio. Exit at the Alamo. Valet parking is available for $25/night. Cheaper parking options abound nearby, notably in the many street-corner surface lots where you can park for $10 daily.
