Student Forum
What is the SAM Student Forum?
The SAM Student Forum, formerly known as the SAM Student Interest
Group, is comprised of the student members of SAM. All students who
join SAM are also automatically members of the Student Forum. Participating
in Student Forum activities is simply one more way for students to
become involved in the Society.
How does the Student Forum work for you?
- Announcements: Using the SAM newsletter,
the SAM listserv, our student email list, and now this webpage,
we keep you up-to-date on the latest student-related announcements
and deadlines. Watch this spot for late-breaking news!
- Conference Activities: Every year we organize
a student-only dinner and a student reception, and we also frequently
put together session panels devoted to student concerns (recent
sessions have included c.v. writing and alternative career paths
for musicologists). We help staff the Silent Auction, proceeds
of which help fund student conference travel. Finally, we make
arrangements for a student rate at the conference hotel or find
an alternative hotel close to the conference site and help students
find roommates for the conference.
Upcoming Conference Announcements
- Travel Funds: Thanks to generous donations
from SAM members and proceeds from the Silent Auction (held yearly
at the conference site), monies are available for students to
help defray the cost of conference travel. Applications are
due 15 December 2005. For more information or to apply for
travel funds, click
here.
- Roommate Share: Need help finding a roommate
for the next conference? We can help! Email
Travis with your specific needs and we will do our best to
match you with an appropriate student roommate.
- Mark Tucker Award: The Mark Tucker Award
is given yearly for an outstanding student paper read at our national
meeting. The award honors the life and work of Mark Tucker, a
much beloved former member of SAM. Any student planning to read
a paper at the next national conference is eligible to apply.
Plan ahead for this application! A complete version of
your paper will need to be sent to the committee well in advance
of the conference. For more information about the award and application
instructions, click
here.
- Silent Auction: We will need all the help
we can get at the next Silent Auction! Don't forget to stop by
the auction site, meet Dianna
Eiland, bid on books and music, and sign up for a time to
help. We will especially need sorting help at the close of the
auction on Saturday evening. Students who receive travel funds
are expected to give a few hours of their time to the auction.
- Conference Events: Make room in your conference
schedule for two student-only events! On Friday night we typically
meet for a student-only dinner. We will post details about the
location on the announcement board once we arrive at the conference
site. We are also planning a student reception for Saturday morning.
If you are awarded travel funds for the conference, you will receive
your check at this reception. This is also a great opportunity
to meet other SAM members! And...there will be food!
What would you like the Student Form to do for
you?
The SAM board recently voted to changes our status from an interest
group to our present designation, the Student Forum. The board also
voted to allow us a guaranteed spot on the program every year. This
is a great opportunity for us to put together sessions that speak
to student needs and interests. We are always looking for ways to
encourage student participation in conference activities, foster contacts
with each other throughout the year, and encourage student members
to become active, life-long SAM members. If you have any ideas or
comments, please contact the Student Forum co-chairs, Travis
Stimeling and Ryan
Banagale
Student Email List: If you are a SAM student member and do
not already receive email messages from us, contact Travis
to be added to the list.
